The SoundCloud Phenomenon

http://weallmakemusic.com

SoundCloud launched 2008 is an online audio distribution platform which allows collaboration, promotion and distribution of audio recordings. Originally started in Stockholm, Sweden but was established in Berlin Germany in August 2007 by sound designer Alex Ljung and artist Eric Wahlforss. It had the intention of allowing musicians to share recording s with each other, but later transformed into a full publishing tool which also allowed musicians to distribute their music tracks globally. Ever since it has had dominance it has gone worldwide with over 20+million users and growing by 1.5+ users every month. To find out more about you can go on to http://soundcloud.com/
http://www.facebook.com/soulcandi
This service has been mentioned on the famous Wired magazine and won the Schroder Innovation Award what brought this service to my attention was that on Twitter and Facebook I always see Deejays and Artists and me being a house music lover I follow and like Deejay pages and on SoundCloud there they share their latest music and have it on limited downloads or share they music mixes, remixes and new music ideas this is all linked into one account and you can listen to the is music on line. South Artists such as Pascal and  Pearce, DJ Cuebur, DJ Mphoza and DJ Cleo to name a few  and also international artists such as The Layabouts, Louie Vega and Ralf Gum also share they music on this sight and the sight also allows interaction were they can like or dislike the music and add valuable comments on the artists music and this adds great Intel to any artist to know what they doing wrong or right and Space to improve.
SoundCloud has a App  which is the popular outlet for musicians to share their work directly with fans, other artists and industry folks—is filled with hundreds of apps for artists on multiple platforms: mobile phones, tablets, desktops and browsers.

Spring Fiesta 2012 as seen on posters all around Johannesburg “it’s back” with 22 September 2012 being its second annual Spring Fiesta like last it is hosted in Boksburg at the Wild Waters Complex they have bigger plans for it and don’t plan on disappointing I’ve been following them on twitter since last year’s Spring Fiesta which was a huge success considering it being hosted for the first time with plus minus 8000 people attending  it last year , this year there will be an even bigger understanding and tickets selling out quickly.
http://feelmusic.cc
Like last year Soul Candi Live brought they best to the party with the likes of DJ Euphonik, Whisky, Shimza and performances from Soul Candi’s Mi Casa and other groups such as Liquid Deep, Big Nuz and The Layders and this year Spring Fiesta features the international deep house hit makers who The Layabouts and they will be performing with Imaani known for the hit track “I found my love”.
The event has been well marketed and has lots of people’s attention with SABC 1 being there doing a live recording of event its assured to be one of the biggest party in South Africa this year. On Facebook and Twitter on the Soul Candi and Spring Fiesta Facebook pages and twitter accounts have been interacting with the fans and giving out house mixes from the likes of Julian Gomez and Fista Mixwell for free download and for the people who already bought they tickets they have an opportunity to download Louie Vega’s remix of Reel Peoples “Golden Lady” and you just use your ticket number to activate your download on http://Spring Fiesta.  This is good cause it shows that the event is well planned and is going to keep growing with such marketing strageties to see more on this event go to www.springfiesta.co.za

What brought this company to my attention is there posters that are in your face and brouchers you see and find around evrywhere they advertise and use the best tool in media which is word of mouth and also use mass marketing for any of they events they use social media platforms very popular in the industry now which is Facebook,Twitter and You Tube to get there events heard  seen read and noted and has been going successfully showing why Tropika decided to back up this company. On of the companys that show that social media and word of mouth can really go far to see they social pages there are links available on their website: http://www.masiasound.co.za

That was just a short example of how hard work and good communication skills can get a business, also showing that social media is a needed platform for marketing in this day and age is vital for businesses in the entertainment and events industry.

Record Label Confusion

http://www.engadget.com

A record label is basically a company that manages brands and trademarks of artists under the record label , the label handles and coordinates the production, distributing, manufacturing, marketing and promotion, and enforcement of copyright protection of sound recordings and music videos; conducts talent scouting and development of new artists and maintains contracts with recording artists and their managers. Record labels differ you get the small localised and the major international labels which leads to the main aim of this weeks blog that many up and coming artists aren't aware of what to look for when offered a record deal  by the various labels is:

http://www.ehow.com

1)Track record of  how the label has been doing in the industry.
2) Relationship's with current and past artists and employees.
3)What they can offer you as an individual artist.
4) What can the label do for your career both local and internationally.
5)What are they doing for you that you cant do by yourself.

Those are some of the key factors for artists to look at there contracts before signing, Record labels have they ups and downs  i have heard and read about artists being ripped off and used by there labels which is what kills good talent and demotivates many artists into signing but at the end there are record labels that look out for artists interests and not forgetting that a record labels main purpose is to get the artist out there with exposure of promotion, marketing and advertisements around the artists without them worrying about the behind the scenes stuff that the label should be doing like distributing and manufacturing.

iTunes revolutionizes digital music world - Part 2

http://www.mydyingbridestore.com/

iTunes is what are some are calling the future of digital music, iTunes you can do a variety of things apart from it just being a music player to being the work centre of your iPads,iPods and iTouchs. iTunes has broken allot of boundaries when it comes to spreading music that you love on iTunes you can find a variety of music genre's such as Rock, Hip Hop, Classical and so forth. Advantages of this programme it features applications such as iCloud where you can save your music wireless using Wi-fi. now available on iTunes on the South African side it has made South African music available internationally  artists such as Lady Smith Black Mambazo,AKA, L-Tido,Brenda Fassie and others are available on iTunes which is a great advantage for South African artists to get exposure.

Some disadvantages with iTunes it is not really user friendly its needs time geting used to but once known it is a very it's very handy, iTunes is for Apple products such as iPods, iPads and iTouches, iTunes for Windows can only sync with iPod, iPhone, or Apple TV. However, the music you import with iTunes, or iTunes Plus purchases, will play on many third-party music players.Apple products are seen as expensive and not for the normal consumers and target markets and since that is associated  there is a tendency of thinking iTunes music is also expensive which relatively decent price. All in all iTunes is a very handy program allows you to get what you want when you want and its recommended by many.

http://www.apple.com/

On the last instalment of this blog Part 3 i will be discussing the Applications that you can get to make music more available to get to make your music experience  to make using iTunes and Apple products a music tool to desire.

That was a brief description of what iTunes is and whats its about to those who don't know what it is, iTunes has changed the digital music industry by giving artist a broader market and still getting royalties and album sales. With iTunes now you as the consumer have a choice such as being able to buy and download albums of they choice and with iTunes you get a preview of the track selection available on the album which is like being at the Music Shop just now you are in the comfort of your own home and iTunes has given the option of the consumer to buy  single tracks unlike going to the shops to buy an album just to listen to a few selected songs but now you buy want you want, There is a virtual library where you can see and view all your music another great advantage about iTunes is you can buy old albums that you cant find at Music Shops and sometimes even online sites well it is available for purchase on iTunes.

    Avicii in South Africa!

    http://p3.no/christine/
Tim Berling known by stage names Avicii,Tim Berg and Tom Hangs is a world renowned Swedish Deejay,Re mixer and record producer of House,Progressive House and Electro house, born  on the 8th of September 1989 and has seen rise to fame than most of the Deejays he is ranked with in the world. In 2011 Avicii was ranked number 6 of the the top hundred Deejays in  the World the ranking was given by DJ Magazine which rate deejays every year buy the amount of work they have done they Tours, Album Sales, Gigs and Music Downloads and after all those results are summed up you get the ranks for that year. The young Swedish man emerged in the music industry at the age of 18 doing remixes and producing with "Lazy Lace" being his first break into fame, Now turning 23 now already ranked no.6 Deejay is a milestone in the Deejay world and he has done this all in 4 years he outranks some of his influences in house music such as Swedish House Mafia which is 10th and the group consists of influential house heads Sebastian Ingrosso,Axewell and Steve Angello also other major influence he out ranks is Daft Punk the Hit makers of "One More Time" and "Harder,Better,Faster,Stronger" Daft Punk Being ranked no.28.
Tim Berg has worked with well known international deejays/producers such as Armin van Buuren who is the former number one deejay ranking number 2 now knocked down by David Guetta who is the current number one in the DJ Magazine list and Tim Berg  and David Guetta have worked allot together popular work being  "Sunshine" released 2011 which got the two deejays a Grammy nomination, Singles by Tim Berg which have gotten him international recognition and the wide fan base he has now are singles such as "Bromance/Seek Bromance" released 2010 and hit single "Levels" which contains a vocal sample from the 1962 gospel-inspired "Somethings Got a Hold on Me" by Etta James and the hit has been sampled by by Flo Rida and remixed by three time Grammy winner Skrillex.

    Avicii South African Tour:

Johannesburg's:Wild Waters Complex 31/03/12 ending of in Capetown: Thunder City also on the 31st with Avicii ending of with the midnight set. Avicii tickets sold out in hours and have been sent out in batches  at certain time and places still managing to sell out in a day. Goes to show that this young man is definitely worth your money even though he is sold out many are going to the venues where he will be deejaying at hoping they will buy tickets from the people who have extras and maybe not interested in going to the event anymore. And Avicii being on of the biggest deejays to come this year shows South African music industry is getting recognised meaning we might have more international guest like last Year we international deejays and producers Deadmau5 and Gregor Salto which also marked a milestone for the South African Music and Media industry.

    Support Originality Not Piracy

To continue from my previous blog

RISA has an Anti-Piracy Unit  which is tasked with tackling the piracy issue in South Africa. Do you really want to be a thief? stealing from your favourite artists? For with piracy that's what you do every time you download music illegally or purchase fake Cd's/live musical DVDs are words always enforced by the anti piracy unit. Support Risa's Anti-Piracy Unit (RAPU) is made up of extensively and stringently trained ex-Police officials from the Commercial Crime, Organised Crime, Narcotics, Murder & Robbery and Legal Services Units of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to help fight this crime for every time you support pirated music more artists don't produce music, Rather get music online you pay either for an individual song that you like or your artists full albums and sites that make such possible are places like Itunes by Apple and Afrodesiamp3.com where you can listen to proudly South African music such as House and Kwaito other alternatives such as listening to music online its free and with that you help your favourite get hits and promote they albums or mix tapes whilst your enjoy the music you know and love. These are some of your favourite artists who are against piracy
    • "I support the efforts of the anti-piracy unit of RiSA." Enrique Iglesias
    • "Support local music legally." Pro
    • "Niks 'Beat' die original nie!" Pieter Koen
So please support your local artists and international artists proudly buy buying originals so they can keep bringing you the music you want piracy only increases black market wealth and decreases artists creativity to work knowing no income is going to come.It discourages investment in South Africa if a company's intellectual property rights are not protected; The artists receive no reward for their creativity and are not able to make a living.
Would you like to put in hard work and have it stolen just to be sold to the next guy for cheaper and you are given no credit so dont Support Piracy!
    LOCAL IS LEKKER

Music Piracy Part Of Organised Crime?

    http://mefirighana.com/blog/
Music piracy is a crime that is done unknowingly done by many I have also been part of this "organised crime". What is music piracy? The term piracy is generally used to describe the deliberate infringement of copyright on a commercial scale. In relation to the music industry it refers to unauthorised copying of music there are Four main categories of Music Piracy are

1)Simple Piracy: The unauthorised duplication of an original recording for a commercial gain without the consent rights of the owner. Pirated copies in this category are usually much cheaper than the original product.
    2) Counterfeits: An original recording is copied and packed to resemble the original as closely as possible. The original producer's trademarks and logos are reproduced in order to mislead the consumer into believing that they are buying an original product.
    3) bootlegs: This is the unauthorised recording of a live broadcast performance. The recording is then duplicated and sold without the permission of the composer, artist or recording company.
4)Internet Piracy: The music is compressed, posted and transmitted globally via the Internet without the authorisation or payments of any royalties to those who invested in the creation of the project.
In South Africa is becoming a main issue also for now with piracy going up artists are losing allot of money due to piracy according to Risa (Recording Industry of South Africa and http://www.stoppiracy.org.za/musicpiracy/ "Artists and the record companies who support them loose an estimated R500 million each year to piracy. Shwi, Lucky Dube, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Steve Hofmeyr, and the late Brenda Fassie are some of the most pirated artists in South Africa. Music piracy is one of the main reasons why young and upcoming local artists don't make it as artists in South Africa.

The issue will be continued on my next blog next week Thursday since 21Wednesday 2012 is a public holiday.

    Friday 9 March 2012

Launch Blog:Marketing in the Music Indusrty

To all music enthusiast and listeners that are interested in music in anyway wheter it is producing music, singing, write and simply just listening to music this blog will be for you. This is a launch blog of weekly blog that will be published every Wednesday of the week, diffrent topics will be discussed every week this launch blog will be on the Markerting and Adverstisng in the music industry after that the blogs will be on diffrent topics such as Piracy, Music influence, Free doawloads, Leaking of music, Music role models and so on.

Marketing in the music: marketing music is getting music of an artist, producer out there to be known by public, getting radio airplay, exposure.
Music marketing is a resource which can help music artist to sell more music, get more people to their shows and make more money in the music business through download sales and ringtone sales. But still you get artists with good music and image but they are unknown to the public is it because of bad marketing from there record label? Is it the wrong marketing stragety? or the marketing departments fault? In South Africa there are very well known artists such as The Parlatones, Freshly Ground and Deejay Black Cofee to name a few these artists are well known internationally and why is that do they have good marketing stragety teams?
